Fighting loneliness and isolation among girls and young women

Sisters Through Boxing helps socially isolated females aged 15 to 20 years, from all backgrounds. Sessions help the young people build their physical health, resilience and self-esteem. It creates a pathway through which they can develop their social and emotional wellbeing so they can realise their full potential.

How does Sisters Through Boxing work?

Participants attend weekly sessions, split between physical and therapeutic activities. By being in a group, the young people are able to make new and lasting friendships. Group sizes are typically between eight and 12 participants, which helps participants build connections with other like-minded young women. It creates a sense of belonging and community.

Under the supervision of a coach, the young people take part in an hour of boxing, building their physical health and stamina. The therapeutic talk sessions support their mental health and well-being. Each week has a theme that encourages thoughts, feelings and self-reflection. Here, they can talk openly about issues that affect them in a safe, supportive environment.

Helping Build Stronger Relationships

"Since coming to Sisters Through Boxing, I have been a lot calmer in myself, made new friends with people I wouldn’t usually speak to, and done things out of my comfort zone which I wouldn’t usually do. It has helped with my anxiety and I feel safe when I’m there, I’ve grown good relationships with everyone there."

What’s Involved

Sisters Through Boxing offers non-contact boxing and therapeutic talk to socially isolated females aged 15 to 20 years. All names have been changed.*

24-week programme

Sisters Through Boxing is a 24-week programme of non-contact boxing and therapeutic talk sessions. Group sizes are capped at 12 users. The two-hour weekly sessions help the young people build their physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Participants can work towards a Bronze Boxercise certificate. They also take part in up to three socials and a residential trip. These socials and residential take the young people out of their comfort zones and demonstrate their personal development, growth and strength.

Our comprehensive approach helps the young people develop soft skills including anger management, impulse control, time management, decision-making and effective communication.

On completion, they can progress to our ChatterBox alumni programme.

Words From A Former Service User

“I’ve built trusted bonds with the coaches too. It has helped a lot with my anger and frustration, which my family have noticed also. The support I have had from them has been by far the best support I’ve had as well."
